kt's Timeline

?-1600's - Native tribes of North America live happily, oblivious of Europeans' existence.

1587-1590- Brief existence of Roanoke Colony; in three years and two tries, everybody in this settlement died or mysteriously vanished. I was one of the mysteriously vanished for Halloween in 5th grade!

1606-Jamestown founded-- first permanent English settlement in the 'New World'

1630s - kt's Great (times a million) Grandfather serves as Royal Governor of Connecticut

1676- Bacon's Rebellion; it's all right, I don't eat bacon anyway.

1692- Salem Witch Trials-- for some reason everyone and their third cousin once removed does this topic for their term paper.

1730's-1760's- First Great Awakening gives Jonathan Edwards an excuse to shout a lot for 30 years.

1764-1776- American Colonists become increasingly hostile towards Britain, finally starting the Revolutionary War. If you can't be bothered to read about it, don't worry-- there's a musical, aptly titled
"1776."

1789- After a rather trying war, a really bad system of government, a bunch of secret meetings, and a lot of yelling, the US Constitution goes into effect.

1796-1800- John Adams serves as president; I fall in love with him 200 years later at age 7.

1800- Revolution of 1800: peaceful pass of power.

1828- Revolution of 1828: more people get the right to vote, new ways of voting go into effect, the convention becomes the way to select candidates. Jackson becomes president, and History teachers everywhere are still bitter.

1846- Mexican-American War: we steal Texas, and lots more land that later becomes the Southwest. "Spotty" Lincoln protests.

1848- Seneca Falls Convention-- and from this point all my term papers are drawn.

1854- The Kansas Nebraska Act: if anyone from my 11th grade American History class asks, this was so totally the main cause of the Civil War.

1861-1865- Civil War, which provides vacation spots known as 'battle fields' all over the East coast!

1876- Rutherford B. Hayes makes a crummy deal, he becomes president, and Reconstruction fails. This is pretty much the reason the South is the way it is.

1870- 1890s- The totally forgettable part of American History. Sure, lots of things happened, reforms, inventions, presidency, but no one seems to care. When the AP exam makes this their DBQ, there are a lot less 5's.

1890-1910(ish)- We sort of pretend to be Imperialists for a while, take most of Spain's empire, then dive back in our shell when things begin to look scary in Europe.

1900- The Progressive Era begins, bringing with it fun words like "muckrakers" and "recall election"-- Ah, Governor Schwarzenegger, where would you be without the Progressive Era?

1914-1918- WWI: we enter in 1917 and afterwards become isolationists again because we feel like we got a raw deal being forced to join the war at all.

1920- Women finally get the right to vote in the United States; sadly, little changes for 40 years. For an explanation see my 12th grade term paper.

1929- After a decade of spending lots of money that we don't have and ignoring our problems, Americans are shocked when the stock market sputters and dies.

1929-1939- The Great Depression, the reason my Grandfather scraped the inside of peanut butter jars long after the rest of us would have quit. And FDR's "alphabetical agencies" are the bane of every US History student forced to memorize them.

1939-1945- WWII: the US enters in 1941, and my Grandma serves as a WAM on the west coast. My Grandfather serves in the 3rd Armored Division, and miraculously lives through D-Day.

1946-Today- To be honest, it doesn't interest me much. Sure, a lot cool people were born, neat things were invented, the Cold War, Vietnam, Korea, the Persian Gulf, historical movements, plenty happened. You'll just have to find out about it yourself.
